The Gender Pay Gap in the UK: Progress or Plateau?
Key Insights on What Businesses Must Do to Close the Gap
Despite the UK's gender pay gap showing a steady downward trend since self-reporting obligations were introduced in 2017, the progress made is still far from sufficient. In fact, at the current rate, the gender pay gap won't be closed until 2065. While three quarters of mid- to large size organisations in the UK have made some progress, 23% of these businesses have either experienced zero improvement in their gender pay gap, or have seen their gender pay gap widen. The issue remains particularly stark in industries like tech, where women in roles like cybersecurity experience a 28% pay disparity.
It's clear that government-led measures such as self-reporting gender pay disparity alone are not enough. There is an urgent need for businesses to go beyond compliance and implement tangible measures. From revising salary history practices to fostering diverse hiring and creating clear routes to career progression, the solutions are within reach. But without a commitment to change, the gender pay gap will continue to persist.
As we look tomorrow to IWD, we’ll be sharing key excerpts from our in-house Gender Pay Gap White Paper early next week.
